About the event
Juneteenth: An Overview
Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. It marks the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that the Civil War had ended and that all enslaved individuals were free, in accordance with the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863.
Historical Significance
Juneteenth holds significant historical importance as it symbolizes the end of slavery in the United States. Although the Emancipation Proclamation declared freedom for enslaved people in Confederate states, it was not until Union forces took control of Texas that the message reached enslaved individuals there.
